HMP 501 - Understanding Health Care Organizations - 3 credits

An introduction to the field to establish professional identity and understand healthcare systems. This course also exposes students to the many issues and challenges, including those dealing with ethics, surrounding the healthcare field. Topics will include organizational structures, legal and ethical issues, government policies, community health, managing information, managing people, and managing resources.

HMP 510 - Project Management - 3 Credits

Development of concepts and skills related to project management. Emphasis on learning and applying concepts in the Project Management Body of Knowledge and how those concepts relate to healthcare organizations.

Students will:

  • Understand the practical application of best practices in project management
  • Learn the relevant components of project management, including project scope, schedule, and budget management
  • Become conversant in project management methodologies using the waterfall-to-agile analogy spectrum

HMP 520 - Financial Management - 3 Credits

A survey of financial management. Topics include the financial environment, working capital management, the time value of money, financial statement analysis, capital structure, valuation of securities, capital budgeting, assessment of risk, and international finance. Consideration is given to ethical relationships among the firm's contract holders.

Students will:

  • Gain a strong understanding of basic financial management concepts
  • Acquire a basic understanding of financial statements, and analytical techniques required for effective financial management
  • Understand management of non-profit institutions using popular press books and publications

HMP 620 - Information Management in Health Care - 3 Credits

Students learn to understand health informatics as the intersection of information technology, computer science, and health care. They gain broad exposure to the field of health informatics with an emphasis on its application to various clinical and related environments (medicine, nursing, pharmacy, laboratory, public health), and the role of the health informaticist in bridging clinical care and information technology. Students are exposed to core concepts and technologies, including terminologies, data standards, development approaches/strategies, data security and privacy.

HMP 640 - Quality Health Care Management - 3 Credits

The planning and control of operations and processes in health service organizations, including design for the future of healthcare. Topics include aggregate planning, facility location and community resources, patient and family centered care, layout, environmentally responsible systems, capacity planning, management of human resources, inventory management, and project management. Models are developed to maximize output while ensuring high employee standards, morale, and benefits.

  • Develop sound administrative and/or epidemiological data collection and sampling skills
  • Understand basic data interpretation and statistical analysis
  • Learn the management of process-improvement projects based on the Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve and Control (DMAIC) model

HMP 642 - Strategic Planning in Health Care - 3 Credits

Principles of strategic planning, implementation, and assessment as applied to health services. Students develop a strategic plan that includes goals, objectives, action steps, and assessment procedures in a unit within their healthcare organization.

  • Apply business principles, including systems thinking, to the healthcare environment
  • Understand the basic steps in developing a strategic plan within the healthcare environment
  • Learn the roles of financial management, human resource management, organizational dynamics and governance, strategic planning and marketing, information management, risk management, and quality improvement in strategic planning
  • Generate a strategic plan for a healthcare organizational unit.

HMP 644 - Research and Program Evaluation - 3 Credits

Understanding research protocols, designs, and strategies used to garner and verify knowledge in the field of healthcare, with special attention to procedures designed for program evaluation.

Students will:

  • Design, implement, and analyze a needs assessment process for identifying both general and specific health problems and concerns in any community
  • Design and implement scheme for conducting a health promotion program that impacts identified community health needs and create an intervention plan
  • Develop logic models to facilitate communication and program planning
  • Select/design appropriate evaluative measures and tools for assessing program effectiveness in addressing a specified community health problem
  • Plan a comprehensive, theory-based, community-based health promotion program

HMP 650 - Managing People and Human Resources - 3 Credits

Focus on recruiting, training, and developing human resources thereby enabling employees to be competent performers within organizations. In addition, strategies for developing as an effective leader and team member in the field of healthcare are covered.

HMP 662 - Health in the Community - 3 Credits

Understanding the role of health education and health resources in the community, including securing community support and investment. Topics include prevention and control of chronic health conditions, efficient use of community health services and resources, volunteer agencies, disease and injury prevention, women's health, substance use, and other relevant issues.

HMP 670 - Legal Issues and Compliance in Health Care - 3 Credits

Understanding health laws and regulation from both the patient and corporate viewpoints, including regulatory laws, labor law, patients' rights, liability, third party providers, and contract law.

  • Gain a basic understanding of the American Legal System
  • Understand laws and regulations that apply to a hospital/healthcare system
  • Determine when to consult with hospital counsel regarding a legal issue that could affect the hospital/health system.

HMP 671 - Ethics in Health Care - 3 Credits

Broad coverage of the challenges and dilemmas facing the healthcare enterprise using the case study method to arrive at ethical and moral decision making. Includes examination of personal beliefs and prejudices that often influence actions. Topics vary but generally include access, cost, quality of care; organizational ethics and risk; professional codes of conduct; principles of patient autonomy and rights; and issues within the community.

  • Identify various models for understanding disease as well as how cultures have attempted to combat the effects of disease with attention given to forming a Christian view of health and illness
  • Review questions and discussions about the ethical implications of healthcare

HMP 675 - Organizational and Government Policy in Health Care - 3 Credits

A course that addresses the economics and financing of health policy, need and demand by the public, and quality and effectiveness of the services including issues of public health preparedness, prevention, long-term care, and mental illness.
